New York, NY (November 6, 2011) - Wagner's epic Siegfried (running time of 5 1/2 hours) had its single largest paying audience ever when The Met: Live in HD continued its sixth season Saturday with a live transmission seen by an estimated 70,000 people in North America (earning approx $1.54 million) on more than 850 screens. An estimated 53,000 people also saw it live on 600 screens in 39 additional countries; 28 countries in Europe (including the UK), and nine countries in Latin America, Morocco, and the Bahamas.
Delayed showings in Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and South Africa to take place over the next several weeks are expected to boost total worldwide attendance of Siegfried to over150,000.
Siegfried, the third installment in the Met’s new Ring cycle staged by Robert Lepage, was conducted by Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi. Jay Hunter Morris led the distinguished cast of Wagner singers in his first Met performances of the heroic title role, with Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, Patricia Bardon as Erda, Gerhard Siegel as Mime, Bryn Terfel as the Wanderer, and Eric Owens as Alberich. The entire principal cast—with the exception of Morris and Siegel—all made role debuts in this production. The live transmission, hosted by soprano Renée Fleming, was directed by Gary Halvorson.
The Met: Live in HD, the Met’s award-winning series of live transmissions to movie theaters around the world, has expanded its worldwide distribution to more than 1,600 theaters in 54 countries, the largest global audience the initiative has ever reached. In addition to Russia, Italy and Israel, new countries joining the Live in HD network this season include China, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Morocco, Slovenia, and the territory of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Siegfried was the third of 11 live transmissions to be shown this season. The next transmission will be Satyagraha, Philip Glass’s visually stunning opera about the early life of Gandhi, on November 19.
