His relentless pursuit of fascinating material, combined with his dogged determination to present it to audiences, have been a rare asset to the otherwise limp and toothless American regional theatre establishment, producing as it does outside of Wellfleet, sentimental, self-congratulatory, bourgeois drivel. American Theater: there may be one hell of a free agent on the market right now, and if you have the guts, I suggest you nab him."
